The Cities Changing Diabetes Summit will provide a unique occasion
for those managing and designing cities for the future: To connect
across cities. To inspire and be inspired by others. To share
effective and sustainable intervention strategies across political,
social and cultural contexts.
The ambition of Cities Changing Diabetes (CCD) is to put urban
diabetes on the top of the global healthcare agenda, and put it on the
agenda of those designing and managing cities for the future. Since
the first global
CCD Summit in 2015, we have moved to concerted action in the
five initial partner cities, working alongside city leaders, health
authorities and a wide set of actors. We have expanded the city
network to include three additional cities, and in collaboration with
the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation we are developing a body of
evidence and insight to share with many more.
At the same time, the conversation about the future of
cities has moved on. UN Habitat III set a new urban agenda around
the liveability of cities, while concern has intensified about the
economic, social and health inequalities that are in sharp relief in
urban settings.
Springboard for the future of the programme
All this
and much more will be discussed at the second global Cities Changing
Diabetes Summit, taking place on 26-27 October 2017 in Houston,
Texas. An extraordinary group of 300 selected people from the CCD
partner cities and leading experts within city and health
leadership, urban planners and architects, academics, diabetes
professionals, and community leaders will get together around the
common cause of finding solutions to the urban diabetes challenge.
It is the second global opportunity that draws together everything
that has been achieved since the programme launch in Mexico City in
2014 and will act as a springboard for the future of the
programme.
On the programme journey, we have learned
what it takes to drive action and at the Summit we will share the
bright spots so far in order to catalyse wider action, and offer our
analysis of what scale of actions will be needed to reach the goal
of bending the diabetes trajectory. The CCD summit will focus on the
following topics:
· Understand the urban
diabetes challenge today by looking at both the lives and
circumstances of urban citizens and learning from leading
international voices bridging the global cities and health
agendas.
· Hear first-hand about real-world
solutions to addressing the diabetes challenge from our
partners – in cities across four continents – about the real impact
they’re creating and how it can be replicated around the
world.
· Share a new approach to urban
diabetes insights from our academic partner UCL, who will
introduce a new methodology for understanding diabetes
vulnerability.
· Connect our knowledge across
cities, disciplines and sectors. We will work on how to
establish coalitions for future action and demonstrate how working
in cross-sectional partnerships is crucial to create healthier
cities.
We look forward to convening the key programme partners
and experts to facilitate continued knowledge sharing and act as a
springboard for future actions on diabetes prevention and care and
we look forward to share the learnings and discussions with the
wider world after the Summit in October.
