What is HRT?

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is a treatment consisting of oestrogen alone or oestrogen plus progestogen. It is available in a wide range of forms, such as tablets, patches, implants, gels, creams and sprays.

HRT is used for the relief of menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats and vaginal dryness. HRT can also be used second line for the prevention of osteoporosis in post-menopausal women when other treatments cannot be tolerated or have failed.
