Types of HRT
Women who have had a hysterectomy and require HRT are usually prescribed oestrogen only therapy.
Women who are perimenopausal (ie they still have periods, but they may be infrequent or irregular) are prescribed cyclical HRT. Cyclical HRT produces a regular bleed, which in most cases is monthly but can also be quarterly.
For women who are post-menopausal (ie have not had a period for over 1 year), continuous combined oestrogen and progestogen therapy is the most suitable HRT. Also known as period-free HRT, it does not induce a regular bleed.
